One place has already closed the book on the Enron trial while the jury is still out. BetCRIS, an online gambling site, decided to stop taking bets on the outcome of the Enron trial after the odds so heavily favored guilty verdicts for ex-chiefs Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling that people began complaining about paying too much to bet on a conviction.

The site closed betting yesterday with odds at 1 to 80 that Lay would be convicted and 1 to 100 that Skilling goes down.

“Customers started screaming about the high price of betting on a guilty verdict, so we just thought it best to close the odds,” said BetCRIS chief Mickey Richardson. “Nobody wanted to put $800 down just to win $10.”

Richardson said he would re-open the book for someone who wanted to bet on Enron boys getting off. That bet pays 5 times your original money.

About 600 BetCRIS customers have put bets down on the Enron trial, Richardson said. He wouldn’t say exactly how much the total pot was except to say it was “in the six figures.”

“Everyone thinks they’re going down, but you heard the same people say that about the Michael Jackson and O.J. Simpson trials,” he said.
